Giuliabeck's Profile Picture
Giulia B.
Artist | Student | Digital Art
Giulia is a german/italian human being residing in a very nice and cosy country called Brazil. By day she is an architecture student and by night a very unexperienced yet excited comic artist.

Her interests include several unrelated and related subjects such as animals, airplanes, history, books, video games, exotic names and sports (although she isn't good at them. Any of them.)
Through architecture, she wishes to shape the world into a better place- like most architects.
She's not very good at that either, but she's working on it.

She's particularly fond of people such as Amelia Earhart, the Red Baron, Derek Robinson (the author), Bjarke Ingels and Manuel Neuer (der Nutellagott).

Giulia hopes writing in third person isn't creepy and that you enjoy your visit to her DA page, she would be particularly happy if you checked out her webcomic that she works really hard on. :)

Previews and Greco-roman mythology

Sat Jun 11, 2016, 9:39 AM

I've been meaning to post this since May 2nd, but due to a series of events regarding my university and some technical issues I’ve come across, I couldn't manage writing this any sooner. Quite frustrating, I’d say.

I’ve been meaning to tell you a bit about one of the most complicated pages I've ever worked with.

"What's so complicated about it?" you must be asking yourself, "Does it bring dynamic poses and steep angles? Is it a new painting method you’ve never tried before? Are you exploring 3d models at last?"

Well, I wish -but not really, no. It's not at all innovative or daring. The page is just downright jinxed, that's all.

Page 62 preview by Giuliabeck

I started working on it weeks ago. As you can tell by this preview shot I took a while back, the scene is set indoors in richly ornamented room. The first challenge here was getting the perspective right - the room is a polygon, not a rectangle, so it took me a long time to be satisfied with it.

You can tell there are many misplaced elements in this very same preview - the lamps, for example, weren't even properly aligned yet.

The carvings on the wall were quite difficult to draw as well. It took me a long research and careful study to begin to understand the behavior of interior decoration in European palaces. The main inspiration for this room in particular was Ludwig II's breathtaking chambers in Linderhof Palace.

Arbeitszimmer by Giuliabeck

What I find so lovely about the details in Linderhof is how sharp and slim they are. The branches and leaves coming out of the walls are pointy and precise, unlike smoother, rounder ornaments in other palaces out there.

I like to believe I managed to achieve the same effect for this page, but you'll be the judge of that. :)

Two years ago, I was very fortunate to have classes with an Italian professor whose specialty is frescoes. His classes were the main inspiration for adding the panels on the ceiling and wall. He explained to our class that during the renaissance, mythological symbols were quite popular in art, despite it being the peak of Christianity.

Interni Rotonda2 by Giuliabeck

In luxurious Italian villas such as Villa Barbaro and La Rotonda, what we see painted on the walls are not Christian characters, but Roman gods and goddesses like Bacchus and Venus. Frescoes tell stories to those who contemplate them. They are a vital part of that age’s history, culture and personality. So why not explore that in the world of The Gryphon’s Odyssey?

Griffins themselves are Greco-roman creations, so I can’t picture a better way to do some world-building other than researching the very same culture which brought them to light.

The couple carved on the walls, for example, were based off Jupiter and Juno.  I intend on giving them stories of their own, but the reference is worth mentioning.

Beside the structure of the room and the details on the walls, the furniture was also a major challenge. The most time consuming of the pieces was certainly the tapestry spread on the floor. I’ve drew it on a separated file and after I finished it, I added into the comic page and distorted it to fit in the perspective.

About the time I finished the tapestry and the room, the file I was working on was corrupted! I don’t know how, but it just went all black. I closed the file and opened it again, but it was just a plain void of emptiness and despair.

You can guess I started freaking at that point.

And yes, I was.

But thanks to the preview shots I took before, I actually managed to save pretty much 80% of my work! It was a really big relief! I’ve finished the jinxed page around…5 days ago? I think so. I am glad I managed that, it took me forever. Now I can finally move on to the next page. :)

(After I finish the 2 videos, project plans, vegetation species notebook and whatever else my professors are asking of me. XD Sleep? Who needs sleep?)

Speaking of my professors, my History teacher has given our class quite a challenging project to finish until July 8th. We must draw a comic about the history of a historic city. Our team picked Istanbul! I am very, very excited about this. I am also scared for life because holy cow, that will be time consuming. The city is 3000 years old!

I do intend to share it here, though! ;) Hope you will like it!

It’s been really delightful to dig in Roman and Ottoman history! Istanbul is quite a clash of cultures! I guess that’s why it’s such a special place!

Another subject I've been meaning to write about is my recent approval in my University's exchange student program!

-confetti followed by a deep sigh of fear and concern-

Oh boy, what did I get myself into?

I've been planning to study abroad for so many years, but now that's it's going to happen, I can't hide how nervous I am. I am also very excited though! I will spend six months of my existence studying Urban Design in the Netherlands! I am certain it will be a wonderful experience, I just really hope not to mess up at anything.

Question: How will this affect The Gryphon's Odyssey?

I've been told by many people who have studied abroad that the easiest way to settle in is to create a healthy and proper routine similar to the one we have at home, so i made up a list of what I expect on doing while living abroad:

-Working out
-Working on the webcomic
- and exploring my surroundings, of course!

In comparison to the list of things I have to do here on my daily life, this list is much - much - shorter, and from what I gathered the hours I will spend on the university are less than the ones I spend here. I do believe managing an apartment will time consuming (and frightening), but I think I will be able to keep up with The Gryphon's Odyssey and, perhaps hopefully, have some more time to dedicate myself to it. So I am actually expecting a positive impact on the story!

Also, upon my return, I will have six months to do whatever comes to mind before my return to classes on August. So I will get to do all the art courses I've been dreaming about for years now and never had the chance before!

It it worth mentioning thought, that another tip I've received from people that studied abroad is not to have any expectations.

Obviously I didn't listen to them.

Thank you so much for reading and supporting The Gryphon's Odyssey! The last page I've posted (number 55) was received with such kind words of support, I am very - and I mean very - grateful for all of you who have been supporting this crazy world I've conjured up in my head! I do intend on sharing some more of it quite soon!

-Giulia Beck

Flag of Brazil Ni oi ma Flag of China , Giuliabeck so do you always have watched Lilo & Stitch series so do you know this Chinese spin-off came out just last March the 27th a new girl named fully Ai Ling in a place of Lilo only in a place of China instead of Hawaii, here is the picture of them… isn't Sparky and that new little girl adorable and perfect?
If your interested in them the Chinese girl and you should, already know that Chinese dragon-like experiment alien, could you draw them of Sparky eating Chinese noodles in a Chinese noodle box or a Chinese noodle bowl and Ai eating a tanghulu a Chinese red dumplings on a stick, please?
So if you don't know what tanghulu is, it's this that appeared in this Chinese show… of Sparky meeting his own partner in China, but there was no Chinese noodles seen in this show or could you draw them in a Chinese festival wearing these outfits, a Chinese gate called a Paifang in the background for them, drumming Ai is doing in that pretty China flag colored Chinese qipao outfit and Sparky wearing this cool outfit like a monkey king sort of having these antennaes on the cap and some Chinese warrior outfit matching for the Chinese festival it looks like to me, a stick and a lantern stick carrying with him as Ai carrying a drum celebrating in that street in China so here are they to copy their outfits and the background with the Paifang for the street Ai's Chinese outfits festival or Sparkys outfits so which one you want them to do in or would u like to do them both to draw in 2 drawings in 1 sheet of paper?

I love looking for someone from Brazil to draw it for the newly Sparky and Ai fans.

:flagofbrazil: Ni oi ma:flagofchina:  is a mix of Chinese and Portuguese of hello/hi, ni hao ma + oi = ni oi ma.

Edit: I forgot to let u know, becus your location said unknown until I found u said 'residing in a very nice and cosy country called Brazil.' so I'm sure u r Brazilian.
